More on Lori

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0521753

Lori was my all - time favorite actress to follow, growing up as a young girl in the US. She was versatile, and her friendly nature and friend next door appeal was positive to girls at the time. I did watch "Full House" and at first didn't recognize her right away. I think it had to do with me being nine or ten years old and not knowing her real name. I didn't read credits at the time, opening or ending credits on the EON. When I first recognized her personality and her bubbly nature, and then her looks matched that of the younger "Jody" that she had played long ago.

The best thing about seeing Lori on television was that I learned to appreciate versatility. She was perfecting the craft of acting in various ways in different settings. Then I wasn't so sad the show had ended, because I would see a familiar face from the past. Basically, it wasn't the end of the world when you lost a favorite show. There were other shows in the future. I also started to add up that the programs ending always weren't a negative thing. It gave the actors and actresses a chance to obtain employment elsewhere and try out for other roles.

They didn't have trading cards of her like they did with the women on "Charlie's Angels," but she was still a heroine in my eyes. We grew up with her as a teen, and then watched her mature to the wonderful person she is today. I think I needed valuable role models like her when I first came to America, although for me as a latch - key kid, they were all on television at first. Teachers and best friends were the ones we relied on outside the home.

Sometimes, I take offense at people saying people we used to watch on tv are "old" or "has - beens" like they tried to do to "Lois Lane" who is now on "Desperate Housewives." I also hate that they tried to make them look hot and sexy like they have no other appeal besides that. It's like people can't see past the bodies or looks to appreciate endurance, industriousness, talent, and other qualities about a person, but then I think that is how they try to hype up a person's career.

Lori will never be old or a has been to her true fans. Those who never knew her will never see her in her fledgling days, except once in a great while, on You Tube or other capsules of time. I think paparazzi can learn a great deal if they look at a person like a person instead of only a photo or a part of a body. They would stop the advertising and the name - calling, then.

The first introduction of Jody, before we knew anything about her:

(including the theme song, btw)

From then on, "Jody" was a fascinating character to watch. We learned from the mistakes she made and applauded her for her successes.

That character was a classic!

First Kiss

The first kiss I think I ever saw was on "The Edge of Night."

At first, you may be thinking, how can you see a kiss on television instead of in front of you? I guess that never did occur to me, because at the time, I was unable to have a comparison between a real kiss and a televised one.

I grew up in a culture where kissing and public displays of affection were not as common. So when I came here, I do remember the kids' shows with the affectionate peck on the forehead or one on the cheek. I had never seen a kiss on the lips.

I think the first kiss I saw was of April and Draper. They were the darlings of the show, unless you count Calvin and Starr. There were also random scenes with other stars, especially whenever the cad, Eliot was about.

After I had actually seen a kiss, I began wondering just what it was.

Why were their lips touching?

Should they be doing that?

Were the lips stuck together? Were they able to separate again?

What if they got icky spit on each other? Or cooties or something?
(The kids were obsessed with "cootie" talk back then...)

(People at school had been talking about lips getting stuck on icicles and
metal objects outside in the winter and even at home in the refrigerator...)

How could the couple breathe in that condition?

I kept quiet about it, and thought that it was a one time thing, and then it would not surface again.

Later, I got tired of seeing it in random points, not only on the show, but in other programs.

I finally got flabbergasted and asked my dad about it.

"What are they doing?" (some random sitcom in the evening)

He said, they are just doing something.

I didn't feel as if that was a complete answer.
Why don't you and Mom kiss like that?
Why doesn't anyone we know kiss like that?

I was too scared to ask anyone about it and wondered if I had to perform this action
at some random point too in this new country of ours. I felt afraid.

It looked difficult.

Then something happened to Draper and when he was taken away, Logan kissed April, and the way they kissed was entirely different from April and Draper. That was the first french kiss I saw, unless they were holding their breath. I became irate and thought that Logan should not be doing that to April.

Whatever they were doing, it eventually stopped all dialogue, and then I couldn't see what happened to the people in trouble in front of the judge. I also couldn't wait for the kissing to be over, so I could find out who killed who, and where were all the missing people..

The show began to annoy me, because of the kissing, and I still didn't catch on that this was a soap opera.

Once I mentioned I was watching EON at school, and one of the kids said,
"Oooooooh, I'm going to tell!!!!!" She sing - songed that I was watching a soap opera.

Then I vaguely remember someone saying that maybe I shouldn't be watching that. I wondered why they said that. I was home alone, and no one said that I shouldn't watch anything before.

During the year, I found out what kissing was. Some girls were talking about the Hardy Boys and Sean Cassidy. Then they said they practiced kissing Sean by kissing their pillows. These were older girls, but we listened with glee.

"See," the fifteen - year - old laughed, giving the pillow a hug and a kiss.

"Is it hard to do?"

"No, not when you practice..like this."

I added that I saw kissing on tv to feel as if I fit in into the conversation.

All they did was talk about Sean Cassidy, giggling all the while.

I hadn't yet watched that show or seen him.

I felt worried that everyone wanted to kiss him and felt a little protective over him. Then I wrote about him in a journal.

"I love you, Sean Cassidy." (meaning that I hoped no one tackled him like a pillow and kissed him like the girls...)

My brother found the journal and blabbed to everyone.

I felt thoroughly embarrassed.

Anyway, after that, I skipped all the kissing parts on the Edge of Night.

I got up to make PBJ sandwiches or made hot chocolate instead.

The Edge of Night Home Page

MINOR CHARACTERS

http://lavender.fortunecity.com/casino/403/cast.html

This was a site I discovered many years ago when I was doing a search for the theme
song of the show. I remembered the word "lavender city," but it's been a while since I actually did a search of any kind on the subject. This particular page shows a list of the actual actors and actresses that have appeared over the years.

I was the kind of child that was inquisitive. I had to know the answer to everything. Who knows? Maybe the Edge of Night had a hand in it. For every crime, there were questions, and eventually, some answers. If I was old enough to understand all those answers and who-dunnits, I am not totally sure, but for the sake of the blog, let's say it's true.

One of the aspects of the show I loved was that they would feature these adorable minor characters that bounced in and out every once in a while. Usually, they were just there to get killed off, but back then, I already knew about Crime Tv, so that was nothing new in light of common plots. So, when I saw one of these rare
characters, I would sing-song:

"There he is...There she is!" (to no one in particular)

I would watch characters in the background as well as keep up with the main dialogue
in the forefront. Those details in black and white seemed to matter to me for some odd reason.

Winter Austen : Stalking!

When I first tuned in, I didn't realize I was watching the Edge of Night. I thought it was "Charlie's Angels" or another similar show. We had just bought our first black and white television. We had also just arrived to the USA. One afternoon I was home alone and started to flip channels. I was entranced by Winter Austin (how I visualized the name back then as no magazines were available) stalking someone (I think it was Nicole Cavanaugh), and I wanted to know what she was doing. Then I told myself after I watched the scene, I would turn the dial. Instead, I was instantly hooked!

There was something about Winter Austen that made people watch the show. I felt that she was a superb actress. I also wanted to make sure that they were actually saying
"Winter." I thought that maybe I was hearing it incorrectly, because I had never heard Winter used as a first name before. The way she spoke was clear and brilliant. Although, I had heard others talk on television before, there was something about her voice that was entrancing. I could actually understand dialogue! I felt like I was in the room with them, and the voice resounded into our living room. The way they spoke made the viewers feel as if they were talking to them as well as to the parties on the screen. That was eerie, but I didn't quite understand that about the show at the time. Today, I feel it even now.

***Actually, this is something notable about the Edge of Night's actors. Their diction and speech was near to perfect. Being a newcomer to the USA was difficult enough, but discriminating words in the American dialect was especially troublesome, because the words spoken were a little too fast for my comprehension at the time.

Although Winter was actually performing evil acts, I looked past that and tried to understand:

"Why is she doing that?"

"What is she doing?"

"She looks like a nice lady. I wish she wouldn't do that!"

I was willing her to stop in my head, as my heart pounded mercilessly.

I even researched her first name at school. They said to me it's probably a last name. I inquired "last name?" and finally figured out they meant "surname." I retorted that they were using it as a first name. I think I developed the status
of a roving reporter at the time because of the many questions I asked people.

The scene with Winter Austen was also my first exposure to seeing an individual being stalked. I didn't know the word at the time, but the behavior suggested it was a crime, because she was doing something evil to a beloved character that everyone on the show loved. I prayed that the character of Nicole would get away. I watched them running around for quite some time. Then I worried that something bad would happen to Winter if she didn't change.

I think I said a prayer for Winter Austen later that night, because I really took all of it to heart.

Dixie Carter and the Edge

Brandy

Characters on the side of the law did very well on the set of the Edge of Night.

Here is a tribute to Dixie right here on Blogger. She played "Brandy" for a couple of years. My personal favorites were "Calvin" and "Debra." Dixie had her fans, though, as you can see with all the posts about her on the web.

These characters on the Edge did so well that even at age 10, I wanted to be like them and become a police officer and a District Attorney and fight bad guys every-
where.

Obviously, that never panned out, but it made a lot of us dream!

Goodbyes!

The other day, I joined the Facebook site for EON!
I saw a couple...

Today, there was sad news on the character, Dixie.
So stop by there and post condolences when you have the chance.

I had also seen a nice tribute to Ann Williams (April's mom) on You Tube.
Her kids were being interviewed by Diane Sawyer about their book.
THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT.

SOAP INFORMATION / HISTORY!

This week is the last week for Brazilian novel, "America." It is dubbed in Spanish
for those who like the mix of parallel languages. The last day is Monday.

From time to time, I may write about other soaps or telenovelas from around the world.

This link here discusses the Brazilian genre.
